Intel's new 34nm solid-state drive
Wednesday, July 29, 2009
The chipmaker announced last Tuesday that it had started shipping its first SSDs made using the 34nm manufacturing process — a shift that should make the drives faster and cheaper. However, on Friday a US custom computer maker said the Bios defect had forced it and other online retailers to pull the first batch of 34nm SSDs from their sites.
"There was a lot of confusion, but it was clear that something was wrong with these first units — enough so that Newegg and other online vendors had also pulled them entirely from their sites," blogged William George, the customer service lead at Puget Systems. "We too stopped listing them, and began contacting our customers who were expecting us to ship them out this afternoon." Intel confirmed the flaw on Monday. "If a user has set a Bios drive password on the 34nm SSD, then upon disabling or changing the Bios drive password, followed by powering off/on the computer, the SSD becomes inoperable," the company said in a statement.
George said Intel had initially told Puget that the drives might require a complete reworking. However, the chipmaker said it has come up with a firmware fix that it expects to deliver in about two weeks. "The root cause has been identified and a new fix is under validation," the company said. It suggested that users who have not yet enabled a Bios drive password should refrain from doing so until the firmware update comes through.

Software To Understand Viruses
Saturday, July 25, 2009
Computer scientists and biologists at the University of Southampton have used the combined power of computing resources within the institution to develop software which provides a better understanding of how viruses evolve. Researchers from OMII-UK, an organisation based at the University's School of Electronics and Computer Science and a team from the School of Biological Sciences worked together to try and better understand viruses using the latest e-Research techniques. Dr Richard Edwards, Head of the Bioinformatics and Molecular Evolution Group, who studies how proteins interact and is particularly interested in short, linear motifs - known as SLiMs - worked with OMII-UK to extend his successful software SLiMFinder, a system which compares viral and human proteins and allows biologists to understand both forms better.
‘A protein can be thought of as a sequence of amino acids, like beads on a string,’ explains Dr Edwards. ‘SLiMs consist of about three-to-five specific amino acids in the protein and could be responsible for the signalling pathways between many proteins, because they control the ways in which proteins interact. They are potentially useful to viruses too. They are small so it is relatively easy for a virus to evolve a structure that mimics them, and hijack the signalling pathway controlled by the SLiM.’ As a result of his studies, Dr Edwards wrote SLiMFinder which predicts the SLiMs responsible for specific protein interactions.
This collaboration focused on the creation of a workflow for SLiMFinder, which used OMII-UK’s very successful Taverna software. This allows the automation of repetitive tasks, such as data collection from databases, or data manipulation and provides a user-friendly interface. Development of the software was funded by the Engage project, which brings together the software expertise of OMII-UK and the infrastructure of the National Grid Service to help researchers around the country adopt e-Research techniques. ‘This superior ease of use, combined with faster execution times, is helping to make SLiMFinder into a tool that could be of great interest throughout biological sciences,’ said Dr Edwards.

Dell Laptops Models
Thursday, July 16, 2009
Different Dell Laptops Models are :-
Dell Inspiron :- The Dell Inspiron is a laptop brand of Dell computers targeted at the consumer markets with different specification models, and its current modules are B130, E1405, E1505 and E1705. First-generation Dell Inspirion XPS and Dell Inspiration 9100, both share the same option in processors with Intel Pentium 4 HT "Prescott", RAM of DDR 400 MHz, hard-drives with Ultra-ATA 5400/7200 RPM, wireless cards, LCD screens at 15.4-inches, WXGA, WSXGA+, WUXGA, along with graphical cards of ATI Mobility, Redeon 9700 64MB/128MB. It marked XPS as an "ultimate gaming machine", and 9100 as "desktop replacement".
Inspiron e1505 :- The Inspiron e1505 is a one with Core Duo PCMAG, just based on 15.4 inch widescreen and supported with 1.67GHz Intel Core Duo, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, 80GB (5400rpm) disk, 802.11b/g, dual-layer DVD burner, and ATI Mobility Radion X1300 graphics. It is a perfect one for the people who appreciate technology on a budget. The battery only manages for about 3 hours. While ordering you have to enter a goofy of E-Value code "E1505PC", if you expect your kit to ring-up with that sub-grand price tag. Righteous pricing indeed for this full featured and powerful kit. The E1505 is available with familiar arctic-silver chassis and white edges. At a cost of 6.6 pounds, it is little lighter than the 7-pound Inspiron 6000. The keyboard is comfortable to use, and especially doesn't heat up after extensive typing, as many do. And the user will be pleased as Dell has fixed the noisy mouse buttons.
Inspiron e1705 :- The Inspiron e1705 is available either with an Intel Core Duo or Solo processor, this machine features a 17-inch XGA (or WUXGA) wide-screen LCD. Options also include a Vidia GeForce Go7900 GS, ATI Radeon x1600 with 256mb of RAM or an Intel GMA 950. This model uses 533 MHz or 667 MHz of DDR2 memory. In Dell Laptops Inspiron e1705 has connectivity options in plentiful, with six USB ports, one FireWire port, a 5-in-1 card reader, and a DVI-D port for sending content to a high-end display. On the other hand, the 80GB hard drive installed in our test machine is probably not enough for an avid video editor.
Inspiron e1405 :- The Inspiron e1405 is a 14 inches notebook configurable with components similar to the E1505 excluding the dedicated GPU options but a bit smaller in total size. At the time Inspiron e1405 was released, it was known for its excellent battery life with under optimum conditions exceeding five hours with a six-cell battery and over eight hours for a slightly more expensive .
Insprion B130 :- The Inspiron B130 is a budget notebook and mainly constructed in a manner to keep costs down. Its body casing is entirely plastic, no fancy aluminum or magnesium protection. The plastic used is not flimsy tough, it is actually quite sturdy. Operating of the Dell Laptops of Inspiron B130 will be easier to the user.
XPS M2010 :- The XPS M2010 is the system having a 20.1 inches LCD screen with a 1680x1050 resolution and it can be transported easier than a desktop computer system, but much of XPS M2010 components are still based upon notebook technology, only in a larger format. The system weighs an astounding 18.5 lbs. It is not known to many people who would really want to carry around this with them for any extended period of time. It has base measures as 19.3 x 8.3 x 2 inches.
XPS M1210 :- The Dell XPS M1210 ultramobile notebook offers superior value. It sports a revolutionary design that turns the display supports into a system handle when the system is closed. The Dell XPS M1210 model weighs just 4.37 pound with a durable magnesium alloy frame. We can add A/V package that includes an integrated webcam, video chat software, Skype Internet communication software, noise-isolation earbuds and optional embedded mobile broadband. This complete communication solution includes a built-in 1.3 mega pixel camera, an integrated omni-directional microphone and an integrated mobile broadband antenna.
XPS M1710 :- The XPS M1710 designing is nearly identical to the previous model, the Dell XPS M170 and it is very similar to the more multimedia-focused Inspiron E1705. It has stylish magnesium alloy and it measures 15.5 inches wide, 11.3 inches deep and 1.6 inches thick. The XPS M1710 includes a full-size keyboard, though it has a separate number pad.

Sony may begin selling a netbook computer as early as next month
Wednesday, July 8, 2009
Sony may begin selling a netbook computer as early as next month.
The company will begin selling netbooks in Japan and parts of Europe, but not in North America yet. Sony are more recognized for their entertainment line, therefore it is hard to know what to expect from their very first netbook. Their netbook, dubbed Vaio W, comes with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 processor, a 10-inch monitor, and comes with a higher resolution.
According to Sony the high resolution screen, 1,366 by 768 allows for more of a web site to fit onto the screen, resulting in less scrolling. Netbooks continue to be the only field of computer sales overall that have continued to flurrish throughout the current economic downturn.

Now Sony entering netbook PC market with new Vaio
Sony Corp said on Tuesday it plans to launch a new Vaio laptop that will sell for around 60,000 yen ($629) in Japan in August, making its entry into the fast-growing netbook market. Netbook PCs are smaller and cheaper than traditional notebook computers and optimised for simpler computing tasks such as Web browsing and email. Pioneered by Taiwan's Asustek in 2007, other global brands such as Acer Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc have pushed out their own lines since then.
The new Sony machine is equipped with Microsoft Corp's Windows XP operating system and Intel Corp's Atom processor. Shares in Sony were down 2.1 percent at 2,360 yen, underperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index , which fell 1.3 percent.

Dell slings its "blade" server line
Tuesday, July 7, 2009
As expected, the new PowerEdge 1655MC server--a relatively slender modular machine designed fit into a rack with others of its kind--features dual Pentium III processors from Intel. Originally scheduled for introduction in the third quarter, it ran into a modest delay and comes to market later than blades from other hardware makers such as Hewlett-Packard. The Dell blade server is part of a larger effort by the company to expand into areas beyond the PC. Though the company has reached the No. 1 spot in industry-standard servers, machines that are based on Intel hardware and the Windows or Linux operating systems--and though it continues to grow its market share in that area and in the overall PC market--Dell wants to continue expanding into higher-margin markets.
Meanwhile, IBM also announced general availability of its own BladeCenter server, a thinner, less blocky system than Dell's product. IBM's BladeCenter takes a higher-powered approach than Dell's initial systems, with dual Xeon processors on each blade. The BladeCenter also missed a third-quarter shipping schedule. Server specialist Sun Microsystems has had trouble meeting deadlines too. Sun earlier projected that its blades would ship this year but more recently extended the deadline into the first quarter of 2003. Blade servers fit nicely into Dell's expansion plans. The company could sell a larger number of servers using the blade approach and also package them with a range of its new services, such as doing the job of migrating companies' computer networks to blades from large numbers of standalone servers. Dell can also combine the servers with its storage products and services.
Blades as a category of server were designed to be cheaper to own and maintain--a major selling point in the down economy. That is because they take up less space than standalone servers, offer neater cabling and can be managed from a central console, making them easier and less time-consuming for company IT staff to administer. Dell's servers are expected to be a little larger than some competing products, but the company argues that its machines are more powerful, less costly and easier to manage in that they use the same power supplies and network gear as its other servers. Still, the new product isn't for every company, with the benefits accruing to those who plan to buy large number of servers.
"It's at three you'll have a cost savings crossing over to the new architecture," a company representative said. "Our strategy was to immediately provide a cost benefit they'd be able to use by taking advantage of shared components." The new PowerEdge 1655MC product line allows a single rack to hold 84 servers, each equipped with up to two 1.26GHz Intel Pentium III processors and two hard drives with capacities up to 73GB each. Six servers fit in each enclosure, and 14 of the enclosures fit in a single rack. IBM's designs permit the same number of servers, 84, to be fit into a single rack. AOL Time Warner has been using IBM's blades, Big Blue said. The blade servers from Hewlett-Packard, Dell and IBM all use chips from Broadcom subsidiary ServerWorks to handle communication between CPUs and other system components as well as from one blade to another.

Dell launches Energy Star certified PowerEdge servers
Saturday, July 4, 2009
Dell's new PowerEdge R610 and R710 servers are the company's first to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star specifications for servers.
Dell worked with the EPA to develop the new energy-efficiency specification for servers, which were released in May, and claims to be the first major vendor to certify entire platforms under the server specification.
In addition, Dell chose the default power management settings to meet the EPA's requirements for Energy Star compliance for OptiPlex platforms, which have been available since 2003. The Round Rock, Texas-based vendor also reduced the amount of time required by the EPA for Energy Star compliance from 30 minutes of inactivity to 15 minutes for the computer to enter the low-power mode.
